in every classroom,
a herd of dark green creatures
stand on all fours
waiting for the morning to come.
in their black-legged glory,
their verdant-colored shell,
the enigmatic species known as "desk"
populates the wild ecosystem known as
"school"
in winding rows, as it has for decades.
it is impressive, scholars say
to have survived years of the institution
without dwindling, migrating,
or simply going extinct.
some credit their shapeshifting ability
as their main reason for survival,
to go unnoticed while being the most
needed, be the pillar for those always seated.
see, these desks are more than tables for
dented water bottles
and wrinkled history textbooks, more than carapace, anime drawings and wild
places to stick blobs of bubblegum under

and red streaked worksheets in and forget.
they are history itself, skin
spotted with a thousand silver
fingerprints and striped with a thousand
scratches—
these desk don't forget who came before, and
